All the above words have consonant clusters. In the previous lesson we have seen only those consonant clusters which have –ય in them. Now we have introduced other clusters. All the above clusters are formed by removing the straight vertical line in the letter. Thus the letter becomes half (without vowel) and then it is joined to the next consonant+vowel syllable. While speaking these words vowel preceding the cluster will get stressed. To understand you can go back to the listening of the words. In Gujarati script following consonant letters has vertical line as part of the letter:

ખ ગ ઘ ચ ણ
ત થ ધ ન પ
બ ભ મ ય લ
વ શ ષ સ ળ

The following consonant letters do not have the vertical line:

ક છ જ ઝ ટ ઠ
ડ ઢ દ ફ ર હ
(Total 12)

The consonant clusters formed with the first group of consonants are more frequent than the second group except one or two consonants like ર, ક. The consonant clusters formed with the first group are also easy to recognize and to write.
